How to convert a fraction to a percent

Percent means per hundred — a value measured against a whole of 100, whatever the fraction's own denominator was. Getting there is two steps, always in this order.

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator. For 3/4, that's 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
  2. Multiply that decimal by 100. 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

Dividing first, then scaling, is what makes the method work for every fraction the same way — repeating decimals included.

Where people get it wrong

The two steps run in one direction only — divide, then multiply by 100 — and the most common mistake is moving the decimal point the wrong way on the second step. 3/4 divides to 0.75; multiplying by 100 shifts the point two places right, to 75%, not 0.0075%. If a percent comes out looking far too small, check which way the point moved.

Why does 1/3 give a repeating percent?

Because it's built on the same division that makes 1/3 a repeating decimal — 0.(3) — before the ×100 step ever runs. Multiplying a repeating decimal by 100 doesn't make it stop repeating.

Is there a shortcut for fractions with a denominator of 4, 5, 10 or 20?
