How to convert a fraction to a percent
Percent means per hundred — a value measured against a whole of 100, whatever the fraction's own denominator was. Getting there is two steps, always in this order.
- Divide the numerator by the denominator. For
3/4, that's3 ÷ 4=0.75. - Multiply that decimal by 100.
0.75× 100 =75%.
Dividing first, then scaling, is what makes the method work for every fraction the same way — repeating decimals included.
Worked examples
A clean two-step conversion
1 ÷ 4 = 0.25, then ×100 gives 25%. Both steps run every time; this fraction just happens to divide out evenly.
A repeating percent
1 ÷ 3 doesn't divide out evenly, so the percent doesn't either: 33.(3)%. The ×100 step doesn't change that — it scales whatever the division produced, repeating digits included.
A denominator that divides evenly into 100
10 goes into 100 ten times, so 7/10 scales directly to 70% — 7 lots of 10%. The full divide-then-multiply method gives the identical answer; this denominator just allows a shortcut.

Where people get it wrong
The two steps run in one direction only — divide, then multiply by 100 — and the most common mistake is moving the decimal point the wrong way on the second step. 3/4 divides to 0.75; multiplying by 100 shifts the point two places right, to 75%, not 0.0075%. If a percent comes out looking far too small, check which way the point moved.

Yes — a fraction larger than 1, like 3/2, converts to 150%. Percent just describes the scale; nothing caps it at a single whole.
Why does 1/3 give a repeating percent?
Because it's built on the same division that makes 1/3 a repeating decimal — 0.(3) — before the ×100 step ever runs. Multiplying a repeating decimal by 100 doesn't make it stop repeating.
Is there a shortcut for fractions with a denominator of 4, 5, 10 or 20?
Those denominators divide evenly into 100 (25, 20, 10 and 5 times), so the numerator scales directly: 3/4 is 3 lots of 25%, which is 75%, without dividing first. Every other denominator needs the full two-step method.
